3 best places for family pictures in Hagerstown Maryland

When choosing your outdoor location, the scene might not be as important as you might think. Assuming safety is not an issue, the next most important thing that your natural-light photographer is concerned about is the quality of the light. The environment might not be perceived as photogenic but your photographer is more concern about how the light will hit his subject's face. It might be a beautiful scene but if the light is either too harsh from the direct sun or too shaded from trees or buildings then the portraits will not be as beautiful as in an otherwise ideally lite environment. With that said, good light during the daytime is usually just a few yards away.

It is your photographer's job to find that good light. The thing is to not get your heart set on one particular spot unless you or your photographer is willing to see what time of day and season in the year when that location would work best. Here are 3 of my go-to locations in the Hagerstown Maryland area for portraits.

The Hagerstown City Park

What I like most about photographing portraits at Hagerstown City Park is the number of different locations within the park that are illuminated at the different times of the day. For example, in the morning the pond side of the park might have too much direct sunlight but just walk a few yards into the park and you have perfect light because of the shade of the tree.

There are also buildings with different shades of colors and textures to use as backgrounds. These backgrounds are usually slightly out of focus or blurry while the face of my subjects is sharply in focus, giving that professional look.

In the City Park, no two photo-shoots are the same because of different factors ranging from the season of the year, time of the day, and different locations within the park. The park has buildings, outdoor theater wall, trees, ponds, walkways, rock walls, play areas and much more, all in one relatively small area. This is my favorite locations.

Greenbrier State Park

The Greenbrier states park located in Boonsboro, Maryland is another one of my go-to locations for family portraits. The location has a sandy beach setting in the middle of Western Maryland which gives my clients a totally different look with the option of walking a few yards and having a totally different look giving variety to their shoot. One set of outfit can be more casual on the beach and the other outfit more semiformal/dressy. Greenbrier in the late spring or fall is one of my top locations.

Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C&O) National Historical Park

I love to photograph portraits at the C&O Canal at the Cushwa Basin. Again lots of different lighting scenarios, and colors. Look at Kelly's portraits below, at the different light and backgrounds that was taken minutes apart from each other. Giving more variation to her photographs even though they were taken at the same location.

Taken at the Cushwa Basin by a near by building. I thought that the while shirt compliments the burgundy background. These were photographed in the summer time.
